Since I’ve heard some of you want ideas for Christmas for me, here are two shirts that I would like.  The two colors are green swirl and woodland pine stripe.  I love this shirt so much that I bought a different-colored shirt (that’s the same tie-dye thing) two seconds ago.  I picked the autumn orange stripe.

We are in a block at school called Business Math and Economics.  We started learning about a self-sufficient economy (farmers who make for themselves), then a barter economy (where people make things for themselves and others and trade back and forth), and a money economy (which is self-explanatory).  We learned about how when you put money in a bank, the bank borrows it, and gives you interest for the capability of doing that.  I got 100 on both parts of a test!  Yay!  Oops, sorry, that was actually a language arts test.

Yesterday we got our calligraphy pens!!  They’re called dip pens, but you don’t actually dip them.  You load the ink into them with a paintbrush.  We will start a new script after working with Roman script with a double-pencil.  A double-pencil is basically two pencils taped together that you draw with at the same time, while you wait for pens to come in!

In handwork, we have come a long way on our dolls.  I have sewed up my doll’s legs and hips and I am starting on the arms and have stuffed the legs, feet, and lower torso.  We have also made their upper torso and head separately, which I guess we’ll put on and sew up later.

We are also learning how to do stuff with staves (a long dowel thingy). Our dolls are complete except for their legs, arms, and eyes.

Every year the sixth graders are in one big costume for a dragon for the second grade play, which happens to be St. Michael.  But this year, the dragon we have been using for three or four years is a little, uh, messed up.  And made of plaster, so it’s about 50 pounds.  SO, we made a new one out of papier mache, and the play is on Friday.  And tomorrow we’re doing the dress rehearsal.  The second graders are adorable, and ironically, someone named Michael (who was my knitting buddy last year when we taught them how to knit) is playing Michael.  Funny, huh?  And the person who has another lead part in the play, St. George, is out with the chicken pox.  So the second grade is hoping that he gets better and might be able to come to school tomorrow.

In my extracurricular orchestra (not the school one), I am principal of the 2nd violins!  It’s kind of strange, because last year I was in third stand 2nds, not first. There are all sorts of little responsibilities and sectional leading and bowing that go along with that.

At church I am starting choir tonight with my friend.  I am hoping it will be very very very very fun. 

I will try to post more often, but especially with track and orchestra and violin lessons, it will be pretty hard.

P.S. In the last post, I said we’ll start to get grades in the second half of sixth grade.  I meant letter grades, like A, B, and C.  Hopefully no Cs!  Or Bs, for that matter.  Bye!  Really, I promise.

Middle school math, a new thingy this year, is where our main teacher (Mrs. Ross) and Mrs. Hurdle, who only teaches this, teach us math.  Sometimes we will go into different groups, but sometimes we will stay all in the same group.  We also get to do calligraphy this year, for half a year, and then math again.  I’ll try to get my mom to post a schedule tomorrow at work on the computer and scan one, since we don’t have a scanner here.

Le Mauvais Bebe Puant

Jacques le Terrible et les Filles Dansantes

Il y a un sorcier mysterieux et effrayant. Dans une grotte a Port-au-Prince.  Il s’appelle “Jacques-le-Terrible.”  [Ahhh.] Il veut des filles dansantes.  [Oh la la!] “Donne-moi des filles dansantes, s’il te plait?” “Pas de filles.”  [Oh la la!] Jacques-le-Terrible est fache.  Il va a Paris avec son chien “Puantdoofus.”  [Ca pue!]  “Donne-moi des filles dansantes.”  “D’accord.”  Mais il y a un autre probleme.  [Oh la la!] Il a les filles dansantes. [Oh la la!] Elles n’aiment pas Jacques le Terrible. {Ahhh.} Parce qu’i!  Est mechant.  Il est triste.  Le chien “Puant doofus.”  {Ca pue} est triste.  IL va avec les filles dansantes  [Oh la la] a la grotte.  Les filles adorent “Puant doofus.”  [Ca pue!] Tout le monde est content!  La fin!!!

I will start with my first camp, then my second camp, then the camp I’m doing this week.  And then some violinistic-icissity things.

My first camp was Camp NaCoMe, and I’m so sorry I only got to write back to my mom.  We had a lot of fun funyaking, swimming, creekwalking, and sponge warring.  During sponge wars, one of the guy counselors spotted a poisonous snake and taking about 45 minutes, killed it, but broke the hoe that he was using.  Also, at the same time, other campers were funyaking, and they found a poisonous snake, too, but apparently that guy counselor freaked out and was yelling and screaming at the campers, “Get out of the water!  Get out of the water!”  And according to the campers, he was also really scared.  But HE says that he valiantly fought the snake.  Bad joke!

There were a lot of other things, like annoying hikes where you almost fell down the hill into the water.  My counselor was Katie – I had her last year, too.  Also, during the talent show, our cabin took up about 50% of the list of acts!  Margaret did a poem and a piano solo, we all did a skit, Alli sang and played the piano, and I played violin.

Second camp:  Senior Scholars.  It was a lot of fun.  My classes were Mock Trials, Photography, and Acrylic Painting.  Mock Trials was for two class periods, and because of that, we got to go on two class field trips – to court, and to juvie.  Sounds like a lot of fun, doesn’t it?  And at juvie, this guy kept locking us up if we couldn’t think of questions to ask.  In photography, we took a lot of pictures and learned about picture-y things and brought four home in a frame at the end of the week.  During acrylic painting we painted, surprisingly enough.  We had to do abstract, though, so we didn’t worry about it too much, according to the teacher, anyway.  There were some kind of mean girls in acrylic painting, and they thought that just because they were seventh graders, they knew everything in the entire world and they were just too smart for little baby sixth graders (even though I was taller than all of them, of course). 

This week’s camp:  I have summer science camp in the morning, where we get to implode soda cans full of 15 ml of water, make test tubes boil, make water boil on a hot plate and then take it off where it immediately stops boiling and then stopper it and put it in ice to make it start again.  We can also look at things through microscopes and do stuff in the computer lab.  Today we are going to hear a lecture about tsunamis.  Then, in the afternoon, I have French camp, with Madame Tucker.  She is very nice and funny.  She really teaches you how to learn French, not just giving you worksheets and sitting behind a computer all day.  When she says a word that we don’t know yet, she’ll point to whatever it is, or do the action, or point to a large board of words that are English and French.  We also have a rule that is “no English unless you can’t understand something.”  At the end of the week I will tell you some French words, like tete, un escargot, named “Escargeti” – I will probably be able to tell you that whole story in French, and then no one will understand (but if you can understand French, please try to translate it for everyone else!).

Oh yes, and now violinistic-icissity stuff.  Yesterday we went to Shuff’s, a music store, to get a full-size violin, which I need.  I was expecting it to be nice and easy, and I’d find one that I instantly fell in love with and took home and that would be the end of it.  No.  Turns out, they only have a few old ones (which my teacher had suggested), and they all were either really really beat up or had cracks in them, or they cost a kajillion dollars.  So, they let us take two new ones for my teacher to look at, one of which I like, one of which I don’t.  But we figured that we needed to bring at least two, so those are my top two.  Even the one I like isn’t that great.  I’ll give you an update eventually.  We hope.

Grandmother wanted me to post today, so I will.

I am, for whatever reason, interested in the saxophone.  I don’t know why, but my violin teacher said that it would be good as a second instrument (or third or fourth or fifth) (or sixth) because it’s in a different key and it’s a wind instrument.  So, Uncle Ernie has a saxophone.  And next time Grandmother and Grandaddy come, they are going to bring the saxophone, if we can get Uncle Ernie to let go of it!

At school we are learning about Alexander the Great.  And also doing Botany and our play.  Our play is called “Prometheus the Fire-Bringer.”
